Mary J. Farren, 91, of Burlington, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021, at Klein Center.
Born April 17, 1930, in Burlington, she was the daughter of John and Ruth Stack Hynes. She married James M. Farren on June 29, 1957, in St. Patrick Catholic Church. He died Aug. 19, 2008.
She was a graduate of St. Paul High School and attended the Burlington Business School.
Mary was the private secretary to the editor of The Hawk Eye newspaper for nine years.
She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and a former lifelong member of the Legion of Mary. She volunteered with the reading program at North Hill School, enjoyed playing bridge, and was a die-hard Cubs fan.
Survivors include her two children, Tracy (Anthony Porter) Walding of Burlington and Terry (Dusty) Farren of Danville; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Ruthann Westerbeck; and one nephew, Mike Westerbeck.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Farren will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8 at St. Paul Catholic Church. The Rev. Father James Flattery will be the celebrant and the Rev. Father Mike Phillips will concelebrate. Interment will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
The Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7 at Lunning Chapel. Visitation with family will follow the Rosary until 7 p.m.
Memorials have been established for Birthright of Burlington and Southeast Iowa Hospice.
