Mary Celeste Machholz, 71, of West Burlington, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
Born December 12, 1954, in Seymour, Indiana, Mary was the adopted daughter of Hjalmar and Freda Schoenlaber Siltanen. She spent her early years in Nauvoo, Illinois, before settling with her family in West Burlington, Iowa. On April 7, 1972, she married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Machholz, in Burlington. Bob and Mary shared 44 years of marriage before his passing on October 19, 2016.
Mary dedicated more than 35 years to her career as a bookkeeper and clerk at Walgreens. She valued a simple, meaningful life and took pride in serving others within her community. She found peace in her flower and vegetable gardens, always looking forward to the promise of spring and the renewal it brought. Mary was also an active member of the local Neighborhood Watch program for many years, appreciating the friendships and sense of purpose it offered. Mary had a lifelong love of cooking and enjoyed preparing meals for her family. She found joy in trying new recipes, perfecting old favorites, and sharing food as a way of bringing people together. In her quieter moments, she loved watching cooking shows-especially those that featured comfort food and home‑style recipes. These often inspired her next dish. Cooking was one of the ways she expressed care, love, and creativity.
One of Mary and Bob’s favorite pastimes was watching National Hot Rod Association drag races-a tradition Mary lovingly continued after Bob’s passing. Above all, she cherished her family. She poured her heart into raising her children, spending time with her grandchildren, and caring for the many dogs and cats who brought joy to her home over the years.
Mary is survived by her children, Elton (Kristi) Machholz, Ryan (Denise) Machholz, and Cory (Risa) Machholz; her grandchildren, Meagan, Derek, Ashley, Dalton, Camy, Andrew, Mallorie, and Marissa; her great‑granddaughter, Quinn; brother and sister in-law, Randy and Evelyn Machholz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents, Hjalmar and Freda.
Cremation has been entrusted to Prugh Crematory. No services are scheduled at this time.
Mary will be laid to rest beside her husband this spring at Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.
