
George Edward Miller Sr. passed away peacefully at the age of 93 in Burlington. A proud veteran, devoted family man, and beloved member of his community, George’s life was a testament to strength, loyalty, and unwavering kindness.
George was born in Burlington, Iowa on June 26, 1932, to Ed E. and Dorothy Eunice Miller. He married Carol Anne Crowner on November 2, 1957. They had three children John (Michelle) Miller, Kathy Myers (Ken Floyd) and George (Elizabeth) Miller.
George served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, entering as an Airman First Class and serving honorably from 1952 to 1956. He was part of the 93rd Bombardment Squadron and the 447th Bombardment Strategic Air Command, where he worked as an Aircraft Maintenance Mechanic, achieving Technical Specialist 7 and Mechanic 5 designations. He proudly earned the Strategic Air Command badge and continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve until 1960. George’s commitment to his country remained a lifelong point of pride.
A talented athlete in his youth, George played baseball and even tried out for the New York Yankees. His passion for the sport continued throughout his life, and he spent many years coaching boy’s baseball, guiding young athletes with his own love of the game.
George was also an avid bird watcher and enjoyed his rituals, especially watching Monday Night Wrestling. He was a loyal fan of both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Iowa Hawkeyes, never missing a chance to cheer them on.
He retired from Champion after 35 years of dedicated work, where he was respected not just for his strong work ethic but for his warmth and positivity.
George had a remarkable ability to lift others up and had a true love for family. He never missed a birthday, always sending a card he specifically chose with a heartfelt message. He reminded those around him that they could do anything they set their minds to, and he truly believed in the potential of every person he met.
To his family, George was the epitome of what a man, father grandfather, great grandfather, soldier, and American citizen should be. His legacy of love, integrity, and encouragement will continue to inspire for generations to come.
He is survived by his children; John (Michelle) Miller, Kathy Myers (Ken Floyd), George (Elizabeth) Myers Jr.; grandchildren, Kristi, Tyler, Rich, Brandy, Breck and Tanner; 10 great grandchildren; sister Sueellen McElhinney; brothers in law, Gene Martin and Gary Ball; sisters in law, Marticia Polewchek and Terri Crowner and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two grandsons, two sisters in law and six brothers in law.
The funeral service for George will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, July 15 at Lunning Chapel. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will render military honors. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.
