Nine Blackhawks scored and Southeastern Community College coasted past Harry S. Truman College, 103-61, in a men’s basketball game at Loren Walker Arena Wednesday night.
The SCC women were less fortunate, falling to Iowa Central, 91-48, in Wednesday’s first game in West Burlington.
The SCC men improved to 13-5 and now prepare for Saturday’s home contest against 12th-ranked Indian Hills (13-4). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Saturday in Loren Walker Arena.
SCC never trailed Truman. A 12-point run early in the game gave SCC a 19-6 lead and Truman never seriously threatened. The Blackhawks soon launched a 23-point run for a 48-13 cushion. It was 59-25 at halftime.
SCC head coach Lorenzo Watkins was able to substitute freely and early. Eight different Blackhawks scored in the first half.
For the game, five Blackhawks scored in double figures led by Jalen Schmieg, a 6-4 freshman guard who came off the bench for 16 points. Jacob Franklin scored 15, Raphael Gay had 14 points and Kaden Johnson and Ibrahim Olajuwon both added 13 points. Jaylen Lee and Merquiche Lewis, a freshman from Burlington, both scored nine points. All of Lewis’s points were in the first half. Inslee Carroll and Bennett Olujic rounded out the tally with seven points each.
Only four Falcons scored. Truman’s Jujuan Newby led all shooters with 25 points and Darryl Scott added 22 points, including five 3-pointers.
SCC Women
Iowa Central jumped out to a 27-10 first quarter lead and was never threatened. It was 49-21 at halftime and 71-34 at the three-quarter mark.
The Tritons’ Laney Pilcher erupted for 34 points. She was 12-for-15 from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3-point range. She was 5-for-5 at the free throw line. Kaitlyn Tendal scored 14 points for Iowa Central and Laney Maehl added 10 points.
The short-handed Blackhawks also had three players in double figures. Naire Lucas led with 14 points. Victoria Escribano scored 13 points and Princess Ibeh had 11.
The Blackhawk women (4-10) play Northeast at Norfolk, Neb., Saturday.
