William P. Payne, 68, of West Burlington, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.
Born Feb. 20, 1955, in Ottumwa, Iowa, he was the son of Philip P. and Beulah J. Myers Payne.
He was a graduate of Ottumwa High School.
Bill worked as an electrician for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway for 42 years, before his retirement in 2015.
Bill was a kind and caring man who always tried to help those around him. He loved riding his Harley and exploring the countryside of southeast Iowa. He liked to play cards and various games. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and pool player. He was a deacon at Sunnyside Baptist Church and enjoyed his church family and being able to worship with them. Moreover, Bill loved his family. His wife of 49 years, Carol, his three sons, and his grandchildren were the light of his life. Bill's passing leaves an emptiness in our hearts, but his memory and legacy continue on through all who love him.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Ann Payne; three sons, Thaddeus (Julee) Payne, Matthew (Kari) Payne, and Justin Payne; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Connie (Dan) Cavanaugh, Mary Ann (Rick) Southworth, Frank (Cheri) Payne, Marty Simonson and Danny (Melissa) Simonson; and sisters-in-law, Mary Payne and Beatrice Diehl.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Sam, George, and Rose.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.
The memorial service for Mr. Payne will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service with Pastor Larry Dodds officiating. Inurnment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery following services.
Memorials have been established for Sunnyside Baptist Church and the Burlington Youth Bowling Association.
