Donna L. Kerns, 93, of Burlington, died Friday, April 1, 2022, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born January 21, 1929, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Raymond and Hazel Josephine (Swanson) Reckner, Sr.
Donna graduated from Burlington High School with the class of 1947. She married Donald E. Kerns July 4, 1948, in Burlington. He died December 24, 2006.
Donna was a police officer in Torrance, CA, from 1950-1965. She was a payroll clerk for Exide Battery for 11 years, and also worked for H&R Block, IAAP and Glad Hand.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. She was a member of the E.C. Blackmar Chapter of O.E.S. Donna enjoyed making quilts, knitting, sewing, crocheting and playing cards, especially bridge and euchre. Donna liked to paint and she was a volunteer in the Day Surgery Unit of Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include her daughter, Laura Lee Hopkins of Burlington; grandchildren, Mark (Stacy) Hopkins of Milford, MI, Brian (Tammy) Hopkins of West Burlington, Amanda Carruthers and Kyle (Laura) Carruthers, both of Burlington; nine great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, Gail Ann Kerns, brother, “Sonny”, brother and sister in infancy, and one great grandchild.
The funeral service for Mrs. Kerns will be Thursday, April 7, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Lunning Chapel with Reverend Paul Hermansen officiating. Interment will follow at Burlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
A memorial has been established for the Shriner’s Hospital.
