The Burlington School board voted 6-1 Monday, March 28 to provide a $1,000 retention bonus to 40 certified school district staff members who weren’t covered by the $1,000 bonuses offered to Iowa teachers by Gov. Kim Reynolds.
Reynolds made the plan for teacher retention bonuses during her Condition of the State speech in January. The motion passed by the Burlington School board on Monday is for part-time and full-time certified staff hired before Oct. 1, 2021.
McVay said she voted against the measure only because she would like to see the bonuses shared equally with all district employees. She noted that the bonus amount would have to be far less, though. There are roughly 425 school district employees who aren’t certified.
The bonuses will cost the school district roughly $43,000, with the money coming from the school’s Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund.
The board also discussed creating a plan that would also reward non-certified staff for staying at the school, and that discussion will continue at a future board meeting.
West Burlington and Mediapolis schools passed similar plans earlier in the month, providing bonuses for all staff excluded from the governor's plan.
