Audrey K. Smith, 96, of Burlington, died peacefully with family at her bedside on Nov. 1, 2023. Audrey was born Aug. 5, 1927, the daughter of Bruce and Hulda Poole. She graduated from Stockport High School in 1945 where she also was a member of the Lady Cardinal basketball team. She graduated from the Burlington Beauty Academy in 1946. She met her future husband William "Bill" Smith on a blind date arranged by his cousin. Audrey and Bill married on May 31, 1946.
They had five children Debbie Kurtz (Terry) Peoria Ill., Donna Lee, Gary Smith (Connie) Rochester, Minn., Chris Hallgren (Jim), Gladstone Ill., and Diane Sands (Dave) Ozark Mo. Audrey was a working mother retiring from Winegard Company in 1986. She loved her time with family which over time grew to include 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 10 nieces and nephews. Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Stuart and Bob Poole, sister Maxine Veatch, her husband Bill, and infant daughter Donna Lee.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff and residents of Addington Place who provided her great care and friendship. We’d also like to thank Freddy who served her daily meals with a smile and wit. We are grateful for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice and their compassionate counsel and care.
A celebration of life will be held for family and friends on Saturday Nov. 4, 2023, at Burlington Country Club 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. A memorial has been established in Audrey’s name at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.
