Barbara Jean Hand, 87, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023. Born Aug. 20, 1936, in Lucas County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Marvin and Frances Egbert Garman Drake.
She was a graduate of Ottumwa High School.
She married Edward Forrest Hand on Aug. 11, 1962, in Agency, Iowa. He preceded her in death on July 31, 2011.
Barb was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and served on the parish council in the past. In addition, she was a member of the Des Moines County Historical Society and would assist with tallying obituaries for genealogy purposes.
She enjoyed making quilts for her children and grandchildren, reading, traveling, and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her children; Steve (Virleen) Hand of Depoe Bay, Ore., Susan Carper of Burlington, Linda (Dan) Ells of Burlington, Jim Howard of Burlington, Becky Heiniger of Burlington, Sandy (Jack) Steele of Burlington, Sally (Paul) Miller of West Burlington, John (Carmen) Hand of Burlington and Julie (Steve) Conrad of Yarmouth, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons Edward Hand and Bob Hand, sister Juanita Hartley, and brothers Marvin Lee Drake, Charles William Drake, and Michael Colin Drake.
The funeral mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3 at St. John Catholic Church with Father Dominic Nguyen as celebrant. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice.
