Richard M. “Dick” O’ Neil, 79, of Middletown, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 10, 1944, in Livingston, Mont., he was the son of Edward Francis and Sadie May Roberts O’Neil. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.

He married Sandra Mosback on June 14, 1969, in Livingston, Mont.

Dick worked as a police officer in Montana and for 21 years with BNSF Railroad.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. He loved the game of golf, was an excellent carpenter, woodworker and mechanic, and enjoyed boating, water skiing, and camping.

Survivors include his life partner Sandra O’Neil of Middletown; two sons, Scott (Christy) O’Neil of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Michael O’Neil of Danville; two grandchildren, Tanner O’Neil and Chase O’Neil both of Williamsburg, Virg.; sister, Shirley (Ken) Powell of Whitefish, Mont.; sister-in-law, Donnie O’Neill of Livingston, Mont. and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Sonny O’Neill, James “Jim” O’Neil, and Tom O’Neil, and sister Sharon Kay O’Neil.

The memorial funeral service for Mr. O’Neil will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 at Faith Lutheran Church. Pastor Ryan Cosgrove will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. A celebration of life will follow at the Burlington Memorial Auditorium Banquet Room.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Disabled American Veterans.

According to his wishes, cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
