Jean M. McKinney, 93, of West Burlington, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.
Born Feb. 7, 1930, in St. Louis, Mo., she was the daughter of Joseph and Frances Schroeder Engelmeyer.
After graduating high school, she graduated from Quincy College in 1962, in Quincy, Ill. and earned her master’s degree in music education through the University of Illinois.
She taught music education for elementary students in Hileah, Florida, Griggsville, Ill. and Fort Madison and was an orchestra instructor for 20 years for the Burlington school district.
She was a devout Catholic and member of Divine Mercy Parish and was honored to meet Pope John Paul II in St. Louis in 1999 and Bishop Sheen in Nauvoo, Ill. She also attended services at Faith Temple for many years and other area churches in the Burlington area.
Jean was an avid fossil collector, loved fishing and playing the violin at church masses and visiting and playing for area nursing homes. While living in Mediapolis, she went to the Mediapolis Care Facility every Sunday to share the word of God and her love for music.
She sent monthly checks to India for over 40 years to help support those whom are less fortunate.
Jean resided at Oakview Care and Rehabilitation Center for the last two years of her life and was blessed with the tremendous support of her extended family.
She is survived by her daughter Ruth (Roger) Tapke, of Ellington, Connecticut; son-in-law, Patrick Mullahy of Burlington; four grandchildren, Lisa (Joel) Langley, Teresa (John) VanUtrecht, Sara Varga and Matthew (Sara) Mullahy; ten great grandchildren and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Kay Mullahy, one sister Arlene Futrell and four brothers Joseph Engelmeyer, Paul Engelmeyer, James Engelmeyer and John Engelmeyer.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Jean will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1 at St. John Catholic Church of Divine Mercy Parish. The Rev. Father Dominic Nguyen will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A Christian Wake will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 at Lunning Chapel with the family to receive friends following the Christian Wake until 7 p.m.
A memorial has been established for Divine Mercy Parish.
