Kay J. Criner, 85, of Burlington, died Thursday, June 23, 2022, at MercyOne Hospice Care in Johnston.

Born February 13, 1937, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harvey and Virginia Hugg Criner.  Kay graduated from Burlington High School and went on to attend college at Parsons in Fairfield and the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. 

After college, she moved to Sarasota, Florida and was employed by Riverview High School where she directed the Highland Dancers for many years and was proud of their accomplishments and performances. Under her direction they performed at the Rose Bowl parade and traveled to Scotland and Europe. In her free time, she enjoyed golf, tennis, and dancing.  Upon her retirement she returned to her hometown of Burlington.

Survivors include her brother, Richard "Dick" Criner (Evelyn) of Des Moines; four nieces and nephews, Terri (Dale) Bunting, Linda Ream, Kay Knott, and Tim Criner; eight great-nieces and nephews and five great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Judy Knott, and friend, Sally Box. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. Kay will be inurned in Ash Gardens Columbarium in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
