Melvin Craven, 82, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026.
Melvin was born on October 27, 1943, in Boone, Iowa, to Charles and Audrey (Bennett) Craven. He graduated from Stanhope High School in 1962. He was a proud member of the Iowa National Guard, serving from 1961 to 1969.
Melvin married the love of his life, Judy Kruse, on May 10, 1964, in Ogden, Iowa. Together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and devotion to one another.
He dedicated 37 years of service to Danfoss in Ames, Iowa, where he worked as a Product Receiver. Melvin was known for his strong work ethic, dependability, and quiet dedication throughout his career.
Outside of work, Melvin found his greatest happiness spending time with his family. He enjoyed camping, traveling with his loved ones, and was always happiest when he had a project to work on. Whether fixing something around the house or tinkering in the garage, he could often be found with a tool in hand, improving or repairing something. His willingness to help others, gentle nature, and practical skills will be remembered by all who knew him.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Judy Craven; his children, Alan(Dana) Craven and Laurie (Todd) Chelf; his grandchildren, AnaEliza (Charles) Martin, Alarie (Eric) Newton, Ashlyn Craven, Jonathan Chelf, Benjamin Chelf, Lucas Chelf, and Elisabeth Chelf; and his cherished great-grandson, Kipton Newton. He is also survived by his sister, Jan Monson, and his brother, Dennis (Bobbi) Craven, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Audrey Craven, and his brothers, Dewayne Craven and Bob Craven.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the hospice caregivers for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided to Melvin and his family.
Melvin will be remembered for his love of family, his quiet strength, his generous heart, and the countless ways he made life better for those around him. His memory will be treasured and his presence deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The memorial service for Mr. Craven will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2026, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor DaMisha McFarland-Pollock officiating.
