Claire A. “Babe” Fritz, 88, of Burlington, died Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at his home. Born October 2, 1936, in Burlington, he was the son of Maurice and Arleen Fritz. He married Charlotte Ilene Varvel on March 18, 1972, in Burlington. She preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 2022.

He was a 1954 graduate of Burlington High School, a 1956 graduate of Burlington Junior College and a 1960 graduate of Northeast Missouri State University Teachers College.

He served as a medic in the Army and spent two years in Germany.

Claire taught mechanical drawing for Fort Madison High School from 1962-1966. He then began working as a draftsman for J.I. Case for a year and worked construction until his retirement.

He was a Jehovah’s Witness. He traveled to 12 countries in Europe and visited all of the states in the continental United States.

He enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions and was known for his large garage sales he held at his home. He loved traveling with his wife Charlotte and his family, especially to Germany and looked forward to the next trip.

He was an avid collector; from books to bicycles and beer steins and all things in between and enjoyed listening to Polka music.

He is survived by his children Randy Fritz, Jennifer Fritz, Amy Bourbon, Jamie Fritz, Jack Butcher, Carl Johnson, Jan Tolasoff, Lisa Forristall; 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Charlotte and three brothers Howard Fritz, Duane Fritz and Verald Fritz.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 16 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. The funeral service for Mr. Fritz will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17 at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, rural West Burlington.
