That’s Yesterday's News is a presentation by local historian Terry Abrisz. Join him at the Burlington Public Library at 10 a.m. and travel through Burlington’s past via the pages and advertisements of local newspapers. Light refreshments will be provided; this event is free and open to the public.
Russ Fry will be giving two presentations about Black Hawk Rock today. The first will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Danville Library, 102 N. Main St., Danville, and the second will be at 1 p.m. at the Des Moines County Heritage Museum, 501 N. Fourth St., Burlington. Both presentations are free and open to the public.
Cranksgiving 2021 will start at 10 a.m. at Mazzio's Italian Eatery (616 S. Roosevelt Ave., Burlington). Cyclists will be given a suggested list of items to be purchased at local area stores. Riders are encouraged to bring about $15-$20 for their purchases and a bag/backpack to carry these items. Once all purchases are made, cyclists return to Mazzio's for a lunch and fun door prizes on behalf of Bike Burlington. All items collected will be donated to St. Vincent DePaul of St. John's Church and Cityhope's The Cupboard food pantry. KidSymphony is the annual children’s concert from the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra. Children are introduced to great music and have the opportunity to talk to performers and see the instruments up close on stage. The concert is held at the Capitol Theater at 4:30 p.m. Adult admission is $5; children are admitted free.
Parking Lot Party from 1 to 3 p.m. at Foursquare Gospel Church, 200 Curran St. Lots of fun and games at this free event. Food will be served, including hot dogs, chips, cookies, and hot cocoa.
Pork Roast Meal from 4 to 7 p.m. at the VFW, 215 Washington St. Pre-order starts at 3 p.m.; call 319-754-6049. The public is welcome. Also, Friday nights are Burger Night.
Snowflakes on Snake Alley starts at dusk as local volunteers install seasonal lighting on this historic Burlington landmark.
Monday, Nov. 8
All You Can Eat Soup Supper to benefit Transitions DMC will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Eagles Club, 2727 Mount Pleasant St. Chicken noodle, potato, and vegetable soups, plus chili, sandwiches, and desserts are on the menu. Cost is $7 per person with coffee. A cash bar is available and music will be provided by D.J. Rena Carnes Meyers. The SCC Baseball team will be there to help serve. A 50/50 drawing and silent auction will be held. All proceeds will benefit Transitions DMC and their work in serving the homeless.
Thursday, Nov. 11
The Burlington Area Veterans Council will host an event at the Memorial Auditorium starting at 10:30 a.m. to commemorate Veterans Day. Everyone is cordially invited to a reception in the downstairs meeting room at the Auditorium for coffee and donuts following the ceremony.
Lunch at the Top: First United Church of Christ, 611 Columbia St. is having their monthly luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The menu consists of pulled pork sandwiches and choice of two sides (mac and cheese, cole slaw, or peaches). Finish the meal with a homemade dessert and a beverage all for $7. Dine in or call 319-754-4807 for carry out.
The World Travelogue Series continues with Rick Steves’ Scotland. Showtimes are 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Capitol Theater. From the Highlands to the islands, see Scotland through the eyes of veteran tour guide and travel writer Rick Steves. This event is free and open to the public.

NAACP monthly meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at the Burlington Public Library. This month's meeting will be held on Nov. 18, 2021, at 6 p.m.
