LeRoy R. Payne, 85, of Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born Nov. 4, 1938, in Wyman, at home, he was the son of Robert F. and Evelyn L. Payne. He married Dorothy Dagenhart on Nov. 22, 1994, in Dallas City, Ill. She preceded him in death on Sept. 20, 2019.
LeRoy worked for BNSF for 23 years. He retired in 2002. He was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church.
He loved cars and was an excellent mechanic. He enjoyed sprint cars, going out to eat and loved his sweets! He was meticulous with his yard work and his home.
Survivors include his two sons; Farren LeRoy Payne and Jay Karl Payne (Kim Delap); step-daughter Robin Payne (Justin Morse); eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two brothers, Butch Payne and Glen Richard Payne; four sisters, Patricia Hinkel, Kathy Luhn, Donna Pacha and Janet Welder; numerous nieces and nephews and his dog “Cowboy”.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy and son Darrell Payne.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Larry Dodds will officiate. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service.
Memorials have been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House or the Des Moines County Humane Society.
