Daniel John Brehm, 89, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024, at the Addington Place of Burlington.

Born Feb. 27, 1934, in Burlington, he was the only child of Raymond and Marie Zeller Brehm.

In his youth, Dan was a member of the Cub Scouts and then the Boy Scouts of America and attained the rank of Eagle Scout with Palm. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1952 and then married Joyce Knotts in June 1954. They raised three children living in the same house for over 60 years.

Dan was a US Army Veteran and served most of his time in Korea. He then worked over 36 years for Mason-Hanger and then Silas-Mason Co. as a Draftsman/Mechanical Engineer, retiring in 1999.

Dan and Joyce volunteered for many years at the Klein Center. When they were not volunteering Dan and his wife enjoyed traveling and would take numerous bus trips whenever they could. Dan especially loved the chainsaw-sculpted wood bear he had professionally carved from the spruce tree in his front yard. He and Joyce would dress the bear for every holiday. People driving by would look forward to seeing this and leave comments on Facebook for "Da Bear".

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; daughter, Danette (Todd) Brandstetter; daughter-in-law, Laura (Kevin-deceased) Brehm; four granddaughters, Erin (Tony) Jacobs, Gabrielle (Ryan) VanDalen, Danielle (Brenden) Hill and Chantalle (Cody) Brown; and four great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Ava, Addelinn and Teagan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his two sons, Kevin and Todd Brehm.

Per his wishes, Dan's body has been donated to the University of Iowa for research, and no services are scheduled.

A memorial has been established for West Hill United Methodist Church in Burlington, where Dan was a member for almost 70 years and deeply loved his church family.
