Jesse Edward Whalen, 51, of Burlington, Iowa, died March 10, 2026.

He was born July 26, 1974, in Santa Ana, California. Jesse will be remembered for his generous heart, his strong love for his children, and his bold, unapologetic spirit. He was funny, fearless, and outspoken.

Jesse graduated from Burlington High School in 1993 and later attended Southeastern Community College, where he graduated with an associate's degree in computer programming and network technology. Known for his natural talent with computers and problem-solving, coworkers and friends often relied on him for help with technical issues. Throughout his life, he worked in the Burlington area, including positions at Drake Hardware, Exide Battery, KPI, and Vista Bakery, where he was known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and willingness to help others.

Jesse was a generous person who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. Whether helping a friend, a neighbor, or even a stranger, he was always willing to lend a hand. He loved spending time outdoors and found joy in life’s simple moments. Jesse especially enjoyed camping, boating, hiking, and fishing.  He also loved bicycling and spending time by the river, where he immersed himself in rock hunting and relaxation. Music was one of Jesse’s greatest passions. In his younger years, he spent many weekends playing with small local groups and sharing music with friends. Those who knew him remember how alive he felt when surrounded by music. He was also a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. His love for the Cubs was perhaps best evidenced by his favorite Sammy Sosa jersey, which he proudly wore for more than twenty years and became something many friends and family came to associate with him.

His grandson, Karter, held an exceptionally special place in Jesse’s heart. Karter was not only his grandson but his little sidekick. Jesse cherished every moment he spent with him, and being Karter’s “Pa” brought him immense joy.

Jesse had a son, Ryne Whalen of Burlington, whom he shared with Ruth Reed. He later married Tasha on August 15, 1998, and together they had two children, Haley Whalen of Burlington and Oakley Whalen of Mediapolis, Iowa. Though Jesse and Tasha later divorced, they shared many years raising their family together.

Jesse also faced mental health challenges. While those struggles were real, they never defined the kindness and compassion he showed to others.

Jesse is survived by his parents, Steve and Deb Whalen; his brothers, Tracy Whalen (Holly), Steve Whalen, and Ed Whalen (Cynthia); his children, Ryne Whalen and Haley Whalen, and Oakley Whalen; and his beloved grandson, Karter. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends who will cherish his memory.

Though his time here was far too short, the memories Jesse created, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

Jesse will be cremated, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Prugh Funeral Service is in care of the arrangements.
