Mary “Janet” Dirth, 91, of Burlington, died Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.
Born February 7, 1935, in Keokuk, IA, Janet was the daughter of William Joseph and Mary Catherine (Monks) Deiling. On May 28, 1955, she married John Henry Dirth in St. Mary’s Catholic church in West Burlington.
Janet was raised in West Burlington and graduated with honors from Burlington Catholic High School in 1953. She was a devoted wife, mother, and home-maker. Janet later joined the work force starting in the purchasing department for Chittenden & Eastman Co, eventually landing at Van Waters and Rogers (formally McKesson Chemical) as purchasing manager.
Janet’s first love was being a mother to her family, toward whom she devoted her time and energy. She was their caretaker, provider, and protector. Janet was a passionate cook, seizing every opportunity to spoil family and friends with her favorite, handed-down recipes. She was a devout Catholic and an active, lifelong member of St. Mary’s/Divine Mercy Parish. Her love for children prompted her active volunteering at BirthRight. Nothing brought Janet more joy than the addition of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, providing her endless opportunity to share her boundless love.
Janet’s passing leaves a deep sadness, but her memory will continue on through all who love her.
Survivors include her children, Chris Dirth of West Burlington, Caren (Mike) Luttenegger of Burlington, Nick (Shelley) Dirth of Burlington, Todd (Cheryl) Dirth of Burlington, Nita (Matt) Carlson of Burlington, and Tara Dirth of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Stanley and Barb (Boyle) Deiling of Yorba Linda, CA; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband, John; parents William Joseph and Mary Catherine (Monks) Deiling; brother Richard Deiling and his wife Lois (Robinson) Deiling.
