Paul L. Van Sant, 54, of Burlington, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Feb. 20, 1969, in Burlington, he was the son of Gary and Charlene Hageman Van Sant. He was a 1987 graduate of Burlington High School.

He married Jennifer Schmitt on April 29, 1989. They later divorced, but remained close friends.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Paul was a devoted Chicago Cubs and Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR races. He was a devoted dad, grandpa, brother, and son who took care of his mother for many years when her health began declining. He loved being on the river, throwing darts, and spending time with his grandchildren. Family was of the utmost importance to him and he loved being at all family gatherings and attending the sporting events and activities of his grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his three children; Samantha (Jamie Weinreich) Van Sant, Amanda Van Sant, Joshua Van Sant, and Molly (Kiano) Cooper all of Burlington; four grandchildren Sydney Weinreich, Jace Weinreich, Eva De Jonge, and Gary De Jonge; two sisters, Stephanie (Eric) Gerst of Middletown and Angela (Pete) Beard of Burlington; nieces and nephews, Jordan Fidler, Riley Gerst, Isaac Beard and Abel Beard; great nephew Lucas Fidler and special friend Elizabeth Williams of Mt. Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, paternal grandparents Arlis and Fannie Van Sant, and maternal grandparents Larry and Etta Hageman.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Paul will be 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15 at SS Mary and Patrick Catholic Church of Divine Mercy Parish in West Burlington. The Rev. Father Jake Greiner will be the celebrant. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Cremation will be accorded following the funeral mass and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.

Burial will be held at a later date in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
