Randy Wayne "Dog" Hiland, 67, of Burlington, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025, at his home. He was born Dec. 3, 1957, in Joliet, Ill., and was the son of Wayne and Sylvia Hiland.

In 2013, Randy met the love of his life, Renee Sandy, and they quickly became inseparable. Together, the two enjoyed time with family and friends, spoiling Cubby, riding, gardening, and just being with one another.

As a young adult, Randy worked as a farm hand and then as an autobody tech. Later, he was employed by The Roofing Company, owned by friend, Doug Fenton, and lastly, by Spike’s Chain Link, owned by friend, Ronnie Spiker.

Randy worked hard, played hard, and was always ready for a good time. He was a motorcycle enthusiast; his favorite pastime was riding. He also enjoyed shooting pool, golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting, collecting HO scale model trains, painting model trains and scenery, building model airplanes, keeping saltwater fish, and refurbishing classic cars. He was a fan of racing, the Bears, and the Cubs.

Randy was a longtime member of A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa District 18. He was instrumental in establishing, planning, and fundraising for the annual A.B.A.T.E. Hospice Ride and also took an active role in other fundraising efforts for various motorcycle poker runs and non-profit organizations.

Randy was a social butterfly and was well known in the Burlington area. He was fun loving with a big personality. He had a charitable spirit that inspired others and a huge heart that made him easy to love. Randy is treasured by many and will be deeply missed.

He is survived and missed by his daughter, Shannon (Ryan) O’Donnell; mother, Sylvia Hiland; siblings, Donna (Jon) Miller, Debbie Bell, and Ryan (Connie) Hiland; sister-in-law, Gloria Hiland; many nieces and nephews; and his close friend, John Fageol.

He was preceded in death by his father; wife, Renee Sandy; brother, Ron Hiland; and brother-in-law, Ernie Bell.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 26, at Lunning Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 27, at Lunning Chapel.

Per Randy’s request, a memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
