Paul A. Hertel, 84, of Burlington, died Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born November 19, 1941, in Burlington, he was the son of Alvin B. and Margaret Bentler Hertel. On June 15, 1963, he married Nancy Ann Newberry in Burlington. 

He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1959 and proudly served six years in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Paul worked alongside his father at Meacham Electric for 28 years until it closed. In 1986, he started working for Automatic Vending Service for 16 years. 

A devoted member of Divine Mercy Parish and Knights of Columbus Council #568, Paul had a passion for cars and generously gave his time volunteering at the hospital and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. He loved the outdoors and could often be found fishing, boating, or enjoying time at the family cabin on the river. Above all, Paul cherished his family. He rarely missed an opportunity to support his grandchildren and took great joy in attending their sporting events.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Burlington; four daughters, Anne (Ron) Breuer, Julie (Jeff) Glasgow, Cathy S. (Mark) Meeker and Karen (Aaron) Engberg of Burlington; seven grandchildren, DJ (Samantha) Glasgow, Anne (Shay) Palmer, Elizabeth (Seth) Fridley, Mary Breuer, Reagan, Anna, and Landon Engberg; four great-grandchildren, Lila, Eva, and Sophie Glasgow, Max Palmer and one on the way; sister, Susan Randolph of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Martha Brueck, and two infant brothers, John and Joseph.

Visitation will be from noon until 6:00 p.m., with the family to receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Hertel will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 19, 2026, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Jake Greiner as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at St. John Cafeteria following the burial. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Burlington Notre Dame Schools and Divine Mercy Parish.
