
Robert James “Bob” McAnally Jr., 75, of Burlington, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born Jan. 25, 1947, in Mt. Union, he was the son of Robert James Sr. and Mary Alena Clark McAnally. He married Terry Talbott on April 15, 1967, in Burlington.
Bob was a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Burlington for 31 years, retiring as battalion chief on June 30, 2008.
He graduated with an associate's Degree from Southeastern Community College and went on to further his education at Western Illinois University, earning his bachelor's degree in fire science.
During his career with the fire department, he earned special training, certifications, and education in many areas including, Haz-Mat Tech and member of the Haz-Mat team, Firefighter 1, 2 & 3 Certification, Certified Fire Instructor, Certified Fire Apparatus driver, attended Arson school at Iowa State University, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team, Incident Command System graduate 1, 2, 3 & 4 and was the instructor for the City of Burlington Red Cross certification.
He volunteered with the Friends of the Library and the Boy Scouts and was involved in the Mississippi Valley Hosta Society and organic gardening.
He enjoyed stamp collecting, traveling, camping, working outdoors, gardening and photography but his passion was always his work.
Survivors include his wife Terry McAnally of Burlington; two sons, Scott (Teresa) McAnally of Elizabethtown, Ky. and Brad (Heather) McAnally of Fishhawk, Fla.; grandchildren Brent of Amarillo, Tex., Adam and Samuel of Lexington, Ky., and Brady and Logan of Fishhawk, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5 at the Burlington Fire Department where the family will receive friends. The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6 at the Burlington Fire Department.
Memorials have been established for the Friends of the Library-Burlington Public Library, the Burlington Fire Department Ambulance Advanced Fund, and the Des Moines County Democrats.
Cremation will be accorded following the funeral services and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
