Letters to the Editor Policy

Posted Jan 12, 2022 8:36 PM

The Burlington Beacon welcomes the opinions of our readers in the form of letters to the editor. The following guidelines constitute our letter to the editor policy:

Letters may be sent by e-mail to burlingtonbeacon@gmail.com with “Letter to the Editor” in the subject line. Letters may also be mailed to The Burlington Beacon, Attn: Letter to the Editor, 1604 Mount Pleasant St., Burlington, IA 52601. Letters submitted through a social media post or direct message will not be accepted.

Letters must be no longer than 350 words in length and should be typed (preferably) or neatly hand-written.

All letters are subject to editing for style, mechanics, and grammar.

Letters must be signed with the writer’s full name. Initials and nicknames are not acceptable. Writers must include a complete home address and a daytime telephone number for verification purposes only. Letters will be published with the author’s name and city of residence. Anonymous letters will not be published.

We limit an individual to one published letter per month. There is no guarantee that a letter will be published or of the time frame in which it will be published.

By submitting a letter for publication, you agree to give us the right to publish it in print and in digital form.

We do not publish second-hand material, letters written for other publications, or letters which are copied, duplicated, or otherwise reproduced. We are interested in sincere and original viewpoints as opposed to canned publicity releases.

Letters written in response to other letter writers should address the issue at hand and refer to the headline and date of the letter rather than mentioning the writer by name. Letters referring to news stories should also mention the headline and date of publication.

Letters containing blatantly offensive language or content or personal attacks of a libelous nature will not be published.

The Burlington Beacon reserves the right to edit or refuse all letters.

All columns and letters on the opinion page are the views of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Burlington Beacon.

This policy detailed above may be modified at any time at the discretion of the editor.

Any questions regarding letters to the editor should be directed to Jeff Abell, Publisher and Managing Editor, at burlingtonbeacon@gmail.com.
