Larry Zahner, 66, longtime businessman of Burlington, died Saturday, July 8, 2023. He was surrounded by his family at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.
Larry was born on Oct. 12, 1956, in Burlington. He was the son of Darrel and Shirley Stafford Zahner. He was well known for his baseball talents, especially during the time that he played for Burlington High School. Along with his teammates, he went on to become a state champion in the fall of 1973. Larry started working at a young age with his grandparents who owned the Winona Monument Company in Burlington. He went on become the owner and established his business as Zahner Memorials. Larry took a great deal of pride in his business of nearly 40 years and the work he did for others. He was known for his honesty, fairness, and caring heart. Aside from the time he dedicated to his career, Larry enjoyed hunting with his buddies and fishing with friends and family up at Lake of the Woods in Minnesota. He was a member of the Sportsman Club of Burlington and Ducks Unlimited.
He is survived by his mother, Shirley Zahner of Burlington, his brothers, Tim (Ronda) Zahner of Shell Rock, David (Jodi) Zahner of Cedar Rapids, Kenneth (Brenda) Zahner of Burlington, his sister, Rose Klein of Burlington, his nieces, Leah (Matt) Weinreich of Burlington, Paige Zahner (Joshua Marroquin) of Cedar Rapids, and Emily Zahner of Des Moines, his nephews, Chad (Krystal) Klein of Burlington, Andrew (Kristin) Klein of Fairfax, Jason, Nick, and Tyler Zahner, Coleton, Jacob, and Joshua Zahner of Burlington, and Zak Zahner of Cedar Rapids, several great nieces and nephews, along with a host of friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his grandparents, Donald “Don” and Genevieve “Jennie” Zahner, and his father, Darrel Zahner.
Larry was a great friend to many and will be missed immensely by all who had the honor of knowing him.
According to his wishes cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant & Burlington Wilbert Vault Works. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date to be announced by his family.
