Richard “Rich” E. Rappenecker passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, at the age of 68, after a courageous battle with heart disease. He was the beloved son of Vivian and Ed Rappenecker.
A 1975 graduate of Burlington High School, Rich went on to earn his Bachelor of Business
Administration from the University of Iowa. A lifelong Hawkeyes fan, he could often be found cheering at Iowa football and basketball games. He also loved the Green Bay Packers, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and spending time on the golf course. Rich’s outgoing personality and warm smile helped him make friends wherever he went.
On July 13, 1984, Rich married the love of his life, Cathy. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two children, Elizabeth and Ben. In recent years, Rich’s greatest joy came from being “Papa” to his four grandchildren—Rhett, Tristan, Grant, and Grace—cherishing every moment he spent with them.
Rich dedicated over 30 years of his career to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, retiring in 2019.
He is survived by his loving wife Cathy; daughter Elizabeth Meadows of Greenville, S.C.; son Ben (Rachel) Rappenecker of Aurora, Ill.; grandchildren Rhett, Tristan, Grant, and Grace; and sister Dori (Randy) Wegener of Lone Jack, Mo.; brother Larry (Lori) Staggs of Burlington; nieces Lindsey, Chaley, and Erykah; and nephew Ashley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vivian and Ed Rappenecker.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Lunning Chapel (2620 Mt. Pleasant Street, Burlington, IA 52601). A celebration of life will follow at The Drake (106 Washington Street, Burlington, 52601) at 12:30 p.m., where Rich would want family and friends to raise a toast in his honor. In keeping with Rich’s love for golf, casual “golf attire” is encouraged for the funeral and celebration.
A memorial has been established in Rich’s memory to a charity of your choice.
Rich will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The family is grateful for the love, support, and prayers shared during this difficult time.
