Rickey “Rick” L. Riley, 71, of Iowa City, died Sept. 25, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born Feb. 13, 1952, in Keokuk, he was the son of Harold M. and E. Paulyne Riley. He was a 1970 graduate of Keokuk High School and earned his teaching degree at Central Missouri State University.
He married Mary Deiling on Aug. 19, 1972. She preceded him in death on April 26, 1994. He then married Cynthia Figgins on Sept. 27, 2003. She preceded him in death on Feb. 18, 2020.
Rick taught Drivers Education and Industrial Arts for Louisa-Muscatine High School for 27 years. In addition to his teaching career, he was in charge of Transportation for the school. Rick taught summer Drivers Education at New London High School. After retirement, he substitute taught at Lone Tree Schools and Highland School District.
He was an Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed time on the river and time spent at his cabin in Sandusky, Iowa.
Survivors include his three daughters; Heather Michelle Riley (Matt) of Iowa City, Melissa Ann Martin (Landon) of West Burlington, and Kimberly Renee Eland of Burlington; eight grandchildren, Drake Ells, Marly Ells, Courtney Roberts, Connor Roberts, Madisyn Martin, Grant Martin, Derrik Martin, and Zoe Eland; brother Michael Riley (Dr. Emily Gualtieri-Riley) of Grand Rapids, Mich., and three nephews, Nicholas, Joseph and Benjamin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Mary and wife Cynthia.
The visitation for Mr. Riley will be 9 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, at the Ralph J. Wittich -Riley-Freers Funeral Home, 1931 Houser St., Muscatine, Iowa. Per his wishes, cremation will occur following the visitation, and has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel. A private family burial will be held on Sunday, Oct. 1 in Kossuth Cemetery, rural Mediapolis.
A memorial has been established.
