
Gregory E. Van Meter, 74, of Burlington, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Health Center in West Burlington.
Born August 26, 1948, in Ill., he was the son of Donald and Vera Stendeback Van Meter. He married Susan Paulovich on June 20, 1970, in Wood River, Ill.
Greg served in the Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. He worked for Amoco Oil Company in Wood River, Ill., Casper, Wyo. and Indiana for over 20 years. More recently he worked for Young House Family Services.
He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish.
He enjoyed teaching and attending yoga, swimming, exercising at the YMCA, and hiking the Appalachian Trail. He loved volunteering with Meals on Wheels, reading to children, and working with youth.
Survivors include his wife; one son Jon (Heather) Van Meter of Utah; daughter-in-law Jennifer Van Meter of Indiania; five grandchildren, Trevor, Lexi, Kyla, Vincent, and Jasper; siblings; Cindi (Jim) Best of Smithville, Mo., Steve (Carol) Van Meter of Wood River, Ill. and Sue (Dave) Snider of Dallas, Tex. and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Jeff Van Meter, brother Bruce Van Meter and sister Pam Polite.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date, in warmer weather. Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
Memorials have been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society, P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter, or the YMCA.
