Elaine E. Thomes, 91, of Burlington, died Saturday, March 12, 2022, at the Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born June 19, 1930, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harry and Elsie Schnupper Thomes.

She was a 1948 graduate of Burlington High School and worked for many years at Burlington Medical Center.

Elaine was an avid bowler for over 60 years. During her bowling career, she attended 30 national and state championship bowling tournaments. She was a member of the Burlington Women’s Bowling Association, where she served as a delegate to the Iowa State Convention several times and served on the Local Board from 1990-2014 as director. In 1991, she received the Merit Award and was inducted into the Burlington Women’s Hall of Fame in 1994. In addition, she received the BWBA Special Award in 2013 and the Men’s Outstanding Service Award in 2014.

She is survived by her local cousins, Iona Beckman, Zerlan Wagner, Donald Schnupper, and Sherry Kaestner; out-of-town cousins, Cynthia Deaton, Richard Schnupper, and Twyla Hassel, and good friend Sharon Parrish.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The funeral service for Miss Thomes will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 17 at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. David Mixon will officiate. Interment will be held in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

A memorial has been established for the Burlington Junior Bowlers Association.
