Larry P. Reid, age 78, died April 2, 2024, surrounded by his family in Burlington.
Larry was born Dec. 6, 1945, the son of Frisby and Gladys Foley Reid. He married his lifelong love, Mary Joan Bertlshofer, on July 17, 1965. Larry was a man who loved his family and cultivated a variety of interests. In Central Lee High School he was an accomplished athlete across a variety of sports. Larry graduated in 1964.
He enjoyed gardening and would grow tomatoes and pumpkins – the size of which might have needed a tractor to move. He liked being close to the river, whether just fishing or watching it go by with a glass of Black Velvet in his hand and Waylon or Willie playing in the background. Larry enjoyed a good NASCAR race and had a touch and go relationship with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Moreover, he loved his grandkids. He liked taking them out on golfcart rides. During Easter he was a master egg hider…which ended up being an all-year affair with eggs turning up late into the October season.
Larry will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue on through all who love him.
Larry’s family include his children, Patrick (Pam) Reid and Derek (Jennifer) Reid; grandchildren, Kaiti (Jack) Helstrom, Liam Reid, Marcus Reid and Melanie Reid; siblings, Bob (Terri) Reid and Jane (David) Schevers; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sadly, Larry is preceded in death by his cherished wife, Mary; siblings, John Reid, Verna Simmons, Mary Ann Riter and Judy Dietsch.
Memorial contributions in Larry’s memory are suggested to the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
A simple cremation has been arranged for Larry in accordance with his wishes. No services are scheduled at this time.
