
Jean L. Smith, 86, of Burlington, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Bickford of Burlington.
Born on September 27, 1939, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Milton and Maxine Ward Weigel. On August 29, 1961, she married Richard M. Smith. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2022.
Jean was a graduate of Sperry High School. She was a member of First Christian Church, Ladies and Stitches, P.E.O. Chapter P. In her early years Jean was a legal secretary followed by being a homemaker. She was an exceptional pianist and could play by ear. She played for her church, weddings, funerals, 76 Singers, Old Threshers in the Saloon, and was active in the Senior Citizens Band. Jean also excelled in sewing, particularly seamstress work and quilting. Although playing the piano or sitting down to sew were a couple of her favorite things, Jean’s family was the world to her, especially her grandchildren. She always made her grandchildren’s events a top priority and never wanted to take for granted the time spent with those she loved dearly, her friends and family.
She is survived by her two children: Renee Fynquist of Burlington, and Scott (Amy) Smith of Bettendorf, Iowa; five grandchildren: Kya Kimsey, Rosina (Marshall) Keller, Spencer (Kylie) Smith, Parker Smith and Dylan Fynquist; three great grandchildren: Zayden Baker, Lily Keller, and Baby Boy Keller on the way. Jean is also survived by a brother in-law John Smith and sister in-law Nancy Counter and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard and sister in-law Becky Smith.
The funeral service for Jean will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2026, at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Burlington with Pastor Dave Yonker officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2026, at First Christian Church Disciple of Christ where family will meet with friends. Burial will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established in her memory for First Christian Church and Bickford of Burlington Activities Department.
