
George “Jim” Melvin Cleland Jr., 88, of Burlington, died Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born December 16, 1936, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, he was the son of George Melvin Sr. and Helen Elizabeth Cleland.
He graduated from Burlington High School and attended Southeastern Community College. He served three years in the United States Army in Germany.
Jim was a lifelong farmer. He was known for his love of antique tractors and more recently for the restoration of and being seen cruising around with his beloved wife Shirley in their 57 Chevy.
He is survived by his wife Shirley; son James; daughter Kelly; sons-in-law Mark Cordeiro and Michael Moralez; grandchildren Julian, Mikayla and Brendan.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, July 13 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 14th at Lunning Chapel. Burial will be held in Parsons Cemetery, Oakville, Iowa.
A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
