John Karl Sandell, 73, of Burlington, died Thursday, August 25, 2022, at his home in Burlington.
Born August 28, 1948, in Burlington, Ia., he was the son of Karl Donald and Justine Walz Sandell. On August 16, 1969, he married Judy Radtke in Summit, Ill.
John graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1966. In 1970, he graduated from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.
He was the President and CEO of Wholesale Distributors and Newsland.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran.
John was a longtime member of Elks and Knights of Columbus and President of the Burlington Steam Boat Days in 1984. He was elected in 1990 to the Burlington City Council and from 1996 to 1998, he was the Burlington Mayor. He was a member of the Des Moines County Historical Society and was a history buff, once hosting a show on KBUR about the history of Burlington. John was a frequent caller to the KCPS Morning Show. He enjoyed his family's 38 summer trips to Door County, Wisconsin.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Sandell of Burlington; two sons, David John (Verity) Sandell of Skokie, Ill., and Stephen Thomas Sandell of Burlington; three grandchildren, Jeremiah, Joshua, Esme Sandell; sister, Marcia (Butch) Bright of Rock Falls, Ill; nephew, Timothy Hurd; and niece, Justina George.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. with the family to receive friends September 9, 2022, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
The memorial service for Mr. Sandell will be 2 p.m. Friday, September 9, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Divine Mercy Parish and St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry
