Kenneth H. Vogelgesang, 78, of Oquawka, Ill., died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, at his home.
Born Dec. 19, 1944, in Burlington, he was the son of Harold A. and Ethel Phyllis Read Vogelgesang.
He was a 1962 graduate of Burlington High School. He served in the Army with the 101st Airborne during the Vietnam war and attended the honor flight.
Kenneth married the love of his life, Karen Fry, on May 29, 1970. He worked for I.A.A.P. for 43 years until his retirement.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling in their camper, and playing cards with friends. He was a member of the Big River Sams Camping Club. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandsons, and attending sporting events and concerts. He was known for his quick wit, infectious smile, love for America, and being a devoted Hawkeye fan.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Vogelgesang of Oquawka, Ill.; two sons, Chad (Summer Austin) Vogelgesang of Danville and Brent Vogelgesang of Fort Madison; three grandsons, Hunter (Annika) Peebler, Calin Vogelgesang, and Dawson Vogelgesang (Molly Johnson); one great-grandson, Archer Peebler and one sister-in-law, Eyloe Vogelgesang of Montrose, Calif. and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Leland.
A visitation with the family will be held from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Jan. 7, at Lunning Chapel. A celebration of life will follow at the Burlington Gym. At Kenny’s request; please wear patriotic or Hawkeye attire. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. Family friend Jeremy Hess will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Wounded Warrior Foundation in memory of Kenneth Vogelgesang.
Cremation has been accorded and entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
