Robert William Cohenour, 79, of Burlington, died at 11:33 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2022, at the Klein Center in West Burlington.
Born Feb. 3, 1942, in Burlington, he was the son of Walden Harold and Audreen Pearl Zachmeyer Cohenour. On April 28, 1962, he married Bonnie Jean Diewold in Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Burlington.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving on the USS Albany CG10 from Oct. 10, 1962, until Sept. 4, 1964. During his time in the Navy, he served at Guantanamo Bay.
Robert was a Machinist for BNSF for 30 years. He also worked as a millwright at IAAP for 10 years.
Everyone loved Bob. He was always as excited to see you as you were to see him, and always had a funny story to tell. His genuine friendly smile allowed him to make friends with anybody, and he always made you feel special. He loved rooting for Hawkeye football and enjoyed watching old western movies and shows. He was a handyman who enjoyed being outdoors and loved the water and fishing. He was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus, a member of the Machinists Union, and a member of NARVRE. He also played on a pool league for many years for both the Iowa Tavern and the Som.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Jean Cohenour of Burlington; one son, David B (Shawn) Cohenour of Richardson, Texas; two daughters, Rebecca S. (Robert "Eric") Dotseth and Lisa M. (Edward) Ortciger both of Burlington; three granddaughters, Rachel A. (Tyler) Korus of Plano, Texas, Sara E. (Austin) Ross of Dallas, Texas, and Hannah M. (Rob Sheehy) Dotseth of Huxley; one grandson, Zachary R. (Kaytlyn) Dotseth of Burlington; two great-grandchildren, Nora J. Sheehy and Kyle G. Dotseth; two half-brothers, Wayne Cohenour of Portland, Ore., and Larry Cohenour of Sedro Woolley, Wash.; and his beloved Dachshunds.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Chase A. Cohenour, his sister Pamela, and his brother Rick.
Visitation will be from 12 until 7 p.m. with the family to receive friends following a 4:30 p.m. Rosary service until 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Bob will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4 at Divine Mercy Parish-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the Rev. James Flattery as the celebrant. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at St. John's Cafeteria following the service. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery at a later date.
Cremation has been entrusted to Prugh Crematory following the funeral.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Notre Dame Schools.
