Michael "Mike" Jarvis

Michael S. “Mike” Jarvis, 80, of Burlington and formerly of Mt. Pleasant and New London, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021, at Good Samaritan Hospice, Ottumwa, following complications related to open-heart surgery.

Michael was born Feb. 5, 1941, in Iowa City, the son of Everett R. and Alice Shannon Jarvis. He was raised in Mt. Pleasant graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School with the class of 1959. He received a bachelor’s degree from Drake University. During his college career, he attended two semesters on an around-the-world cruise aboard the University of the Seven Seas.

Michael enlisted in the US Army Intelligence Corp., serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. Following his discharge, he was employed as a cost control analyst and engineer at the IAAP. He later worked as an engineer at Exide until his retirement.

On Oct. 10, 1970, he was united in marriage to Rosalie Miller. They divorced in 1995. He later married Lisa Gerdes; they separated in 2008.

Michael enjoyed his many pets (cats, dogs, and horses), collecting art and antiques, world travel, and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Michael is survived by two sons, Samuel P. Jarvis (Fiancée Aubrey) of Ottumwa and Jonathan E. Jarvis of Oskaloosa; one sister, Sharon Tozer of Mt. Pleasant; and one brother, Roger Maynard of Fort Collins, Colo.

Cremation has been accorded per his wishes. Lunning Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. Shane McCampbell will officiate. Inurnment with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.

The family requests no flowers or plants. Donations may be made in his memory to the Des Moines County Humane Society.
