Zeta Sue Payne Shannan, 87, of West Burlington, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 1, 1936, he was raised on a farm SW of Bonaparte, she was the daughter of C.C. “Chuck” and Dorothy Story Payne. She graduated Bonaparte High School and attended the Iowa Business School in Ottumwa.

She married Joe Shannan on Oct. 22, 1955, in Bonaparte.

Zeta was a receptionist for several offices in the Burlington area and a homemaker. She was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church and a past officer of the West Burlington PTA.

She was a great cook and loved playing cards, especially pinocle and pitch and traveling with her husband, visiting all 50 states and every presidential burial site. She enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals and called daily to check on her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Joe Shannan of West Burlington; two children, Molly A. (Kevin) Christensen of Danville, Iowa and Troy L. (Amie) Shannan of Belleair Beach, Florida; six grandchildren, Dillon E. Christensen of Danville, Iowa, Brian J. Shannan of Ames, Iowa, Trever R. Shannan of Tampa, Florida, Terren C. Shannan of Tampa, Florida, Kate J. Shannan of Washington State and Landri L. Shannan of Westchester, Pennsylvania; daughter-in-law, Deb Shannan of Colorado; two nieces; one nephew and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chuck and Dorothy Payne, daughter Tracy Shannan, son Jay Shannan and brother Jerry Payne.

The funeral service for Mrs. Shannan will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Nancy Sutherland will officiate. Interment will be in Thompson Cemetery, rural Bonaparte, Iowa.

Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Memorials have been established for the West Burlington United Methodist Church, the Special Needs Foundation for the Thompson Cemetery Fund.
