Donald Downer, 88, of Sperry, died Monday, September 30, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington surround by his family. Born July 31, 1936 in Burlington, he was the son of Maxwell D. and Geneva Mester Downer.
He was a 1954 graduate of Sperry High School and served in the National Guard.
He married Mary June Housman on May 20, 1956 at Salem Lutheran Church in Salem, Iowa. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2024.
Don worked in construction after high school, The Foundary, as a mechanic for John Deere and an engine machinist and service mechanic for an outboard marine local dealership shop.
He was a very accomplished woodworker and enjoyed fishing and camping.
He is survived by his three children; Kevin (Suzanne) Downer of Burlington, Doug (Susan) Downer of Florida and Melody (Duane) Berenger; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one brother Maxwell D. Downer Jr.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2024, in Burlington Memorial Park with Pastor James Zuehls officiating.
