Dallam Gilbert “Dal” Thompson, 92, of Burlington, died Friday, April 12, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born April 4, 1932, in Burlington, he was the son of Derby D. and Dorothy M. Wilson Thompson. On Sept. 15, 1956, he married Shirley J Brown in Colesburg.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1950, and then attended the University of Iowa.

Dal was an aircraft engine mechanic and flight crew member in the Navy during the Korean War, serving from 1951 until 1955.

He was the founder of Atlas Warehouse Co., Pak-A-Way Container Service, and Atlas Intermodal Trucking Service.

Dal moved to Sun City West, Ariz. in 1999, and later moved back to Burlington in 2018. He enjoyed golfing and was a member and former President of the Burlington Golf Club, member of the First Presbyterian Church, Burlington Rotary Club and a member of the Elks.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley J.. Thompson of Burlington; two sons, David D. (Donna) Thompson of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Michael J. (Teresa) Thompson of Galesburg, lll.; four grandchildren, David C. (Jess), Taylor (Vince), Coby, and Jaclyn (Jason); and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James Thompson and Derby Thompson.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.

The memorial service for Mr. Thompson will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A celebration of life will be held at the Burlington Golf Club at a later date.

Memorials have been established for First Presbyterian Church and the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
