
Joseph Loy Sullivan, 81, of West Burlington, died at 10:05 a.m. on Friday, March 25, 2022, at the Danville Care Center.
Born on August 20, 1940, in Truro, Iowa, he was the son of Harold C.
and Viola I. Treat Sullivan. He was a 1959 graduate of Mediapolis High
School. On July 22, 1962, he married Janice G. Kinney in Burlington. She
passed away from cancer on May 14, 1996.
On June 12, 2010, he married Melanie Moore Lyon in Burlington.
Mr. Sullivan worked at J.I. Case Company for 32 years. He served for
22 years and 10 months in the Iowa National Guard, being deployed with
the 224th Engineer Battalion to Germany during Desert Storm. After his
retirement from Case Company, he worked part-time for 10 years at J.B.
Barracudas in the Pzazz Complex.
Mr. Sullivan was an avid bowler for over 62 years, being part of many
teams and leagues. He competed in many tournaments, including the
Burlington City, King of the Hill, National, State, Senior State,
Tavern, Peterson Classic, Springfield/Decatur and Nine Pin Taps. He was
inducted into the Burlington Bowling Hall of Fame in 2012. He was most
proud to have competed for 25 years in the National Bowling Tournament,
traveling to many different cities and states over the years. Mr.
Sullivan also enjoyed golf, fishing, computer games, casino machines,
Jigsaw puzzles, and meeting the a special group of friends known as “the
couch potatoes” on weekday mornings for coffee until Covid-19 put a
stop to it.
Survivors include his wife, Melanie M. Sullivan of West Burlington;
son Joseph Scott (Mary) Sullivan of Mt. Airy, North Carolina; daughter,
Dina (Jerry) Allen of Ft. Madison; step-daughter, Jennifer (Randy) Reece
of Cedar Rapids; step-son, Jeffrey (Joni) Lyon of West Des Moines;
three grandchildren; Lynnae (Zack) Allen Wallet of Davenport; Christian
Sullivan of Stuart, Virginia; and Kaitlyn Sullivan of Greensboro, North
Carolina; five step-grandchildren, Caden, Ella and Maggie Reece, Tate
and Tyge Lyon; nephews, Steve, Rick and David Sullivan; and several
nieces and nephews from his previous marriage.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Janice; his
brothers, Delbert, Leland, Patrick, Samuel and Thomas Sullivan, and
step-son, Timothy Lyon.
Visitation will be at Lunning Funeral Chapel. The family will
receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at
Lunning Funeral Chapel at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2022 with
Melanie Greengo officiating.
Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Burlington Bowling Association Junior Bowlers.
