Cynthia “Cindy” Schmell, 61, of Burlington, Iowa, died Monday, December 15, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.
Born on January 17, 1964, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Gerald Schmell and Mary Ann (Howell) Wilbanks.
Cindy was a 1983 graduate of Burlington High School. She moved to New York after her graduation for a short while until her return back to Burlington. She was of Catholic faith. Cindy had a heart of gold and loved caring for people, especially being the caretaker of her mother. In her free time, she enjoyed doing puzzles, crafts, and shopping. Decorating her house for all the holiday celebrations brought her the most joy. Her caring and loving heart will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her mother Mary Ann Wilbanks; two brothers: Matthew Schmell of Montana and Joseph Schmell of Burlington; a niece Dr. Caroline Jones of Oklahoma; step-brother Ringo Covert; three aunts: Barb Bechtel, Kathy (Mike) McCannon, Julie (Dan) Wishmeier; five uncles: John Howell, Michael Howell, Jim (Tammy) Howell, Jerry Powell and Rick Schoof. Also surviving are many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, father Gerald, five aunts Patricia Sutty, Theresa Mack, Joann Schoof, Cheryl Powell, and Sandra Howell; two uncles, Hoss Sutty and Ron Bechtel.
Per her wishes, cremation has been entrusted and accorded to the care of Lunning Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2026.
