Douglas Eugene Smith, 79, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born April 13, 1943, in Illinois, he was the son of Kenneth and Julia R. Thompson Smith. He married Linda Randall and had three children together then later divorced. In 1973, Douglas married Joann Bell in Burlington.
Douglas graduated from Union High School in 1961.
He worked at JI Case in shipping and receiving for 30 years until his retirement. He was a proud member of UAW Local 807 and was part of the executive board.
He was a member of the Meyer Marina, Moose Lodge, VFW, Eagles Club, and the Burlington Gym. He was in the pool league for the Burlington Gym as well. Douglas was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching Illinois basketball and football and SCC basketball. He loved the New York Yankees. His favorite activity was going out on the river, with his wife, on the pontoon.
Survivors include his wife, Joann Smith of Burlington; two daughters, Debi O'Malley and Patricia Pedon; son Jeff Smith; three step-daughters, Dawn Howerton, Dede Samul, and Darsi Hodgkin; 14 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Cheryl Beilser; one niece and one nephew.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Danny Smith, mother and father-in-law, two brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.
The funeral service for Mr. Smith will be 2 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.
