Barbara Joyce Powell, 90, of Burlington, died Dec. 22, 2023, at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

She was born Sept. 18, 1933, in Burlington, the daughter of George & Esther Amelia Moberg Nielsen.

Barbara graduated from Burlington High School, class of 1951. Following graduation she married her high school sweetheart, Robert Donald Powell, on Sept. 7, 1952. During Bob’s military career they were given orders to serve and live throughout the United States and abroad. They celebrated 51 years of marriage in Sept. 2003.

Barbara was a lifelong member of Messiah Lutheran Church and enjoyed teaching Sunday School, Bible School, and Peacemakers, a group sewing quilts for mission work. Her hobbies included handwork, knitting, sewing and counted cross-stitch. She enjoyed creative writing and had a deep love for dogs. She had a passion for Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Barbara joined Girl Scouts during World War ll, keeping true to the GS Promise and Law, she learned to serve God and our country. Following through as an adult, with her love for the Girl Scouts and its purpose, she volunteered as a troop leader and day camp director and served on the Board of Directors. In her tenure, she was recruited as a staff member for Field Service and Membership Director. While working she met many dedicated volunteers and made loyal lifetime friends. Out of respect and gratitude for Barbara’s service, she was honored with the Council award designed in her name The Barb Powell Greatest Girl Scout Award.

She was preceded in death by her parents and Lilian Balzer Nielsen. A sister Marian Ekdale Kliner and her husband Robert Donald Powell.

Survivors include her three children and spouses; Tim & Lori Powell, Susan Powell-Fedler & Donald Fedler, and Sarah & Eric Higgins. Five grandchildren; Amelia & Erminio Lalli, Ainsley & Tyler Cassens, Arlan “AJ” Fedler, Bailey Higgins & Riley Higgins. Four great grandchildren Adrianna Joyce and Michelina Grace Lalli, William Joseph, and James Robert Cassens. Two cherished nephews; Allan “Tony” Ekdale, Gregory & Lynne Ekdale, and their families. Her dog and loyal companion Sophie.

According to her wishes cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel. A private family inurnment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date. Those who wish to remember Barbara in a special way may make gifts in her memory to Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House or PAW Animal Shelter.
