Desmond Lee Kulp Jr., 87, of Fort Madison, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at the Birkwood Village of Fort Madison.

Born June 18, 1936, in Columbus City, he was the son of Desmond Lee Sr. and Marion Clyde Hanft Kulp. He married Mary “Tudy” Breuer on Nov. 26, 1960. They later divorced.

Desmond served in the Marine Corps from 1953-1955. He owned and operated Lee’s Equipment Repair for many years and then worked for Hertz Crane Rental. After his retirement, he managed a storage facility in Kemah, Texas.

He was an avid reader. After his retirement, he enjoyed sailing all throughout the Caribbean and Aruba. He was an experienced diver and loved underwater photography.

He is survived by his daughter, Kristina Bernhardt of Fort Madison; granddaughter Tabitha Nuss of Des Moines, and sister Judy Bloyd of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Jeff Kulp and one sister Jeanine Storks.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends. Burial will follow the visitation at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the P.A.W.S. animal shelter of Fort Madison.
