
Paul E. Luers, 100, formerly of Burlington, died Sunday, March 30, 2025, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
Born on Dec. 16, 1924, in Rensselaer, Ind., he was the son of Arnold and Mary Jacks Luers. On April 19, 1952, in Albuquerque, N.M., he married Adelle Taylor, she survives.
Paul served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954 at the Kirkland Air Force Base during the Korean Conflict. After his service, he worked for Sandia Corporation as a civilian contractor and inspector for their Atomic Weapons Systems division. Paul later worked for Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown and Pantex in Amarillo, Texas, where he retired in 1990. For several years after retirement, Paul worked part time at Flint Hills Golf Course. He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, attending Saints Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Burlington Eagles Aerie #150. In Paul’s free time he enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and camping. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, especially loved watching the Iowa Hawkeye Softball team. Paul loved nothing more than being with his wife Adelle and his family.
He is survived by his wife Adelle; six children: Paula (Randal) Messamaker of West Burlington, Iowa, Deborah Cullison of Webster, Florida, Brian (Marcia) Luers of Burlington, Iowa, David (Sue) Luers of Cisco, Utah, Renee Gillispie of Riverside, Iowa, and Allan (Jerilyn) Luers of Middletown, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, two brothers; son in-law Michael Cullison and granddaughter Mary Ann Messamaker.
The Mass of Christian burial for Paul will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2025, at St. John Catholic Church in Burlington with Father Dominic as celebrant. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at St. John Catholic Church where the family will receive friends. Burial will be held in Greenwood Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his memory.
