Stephen Ralph Nelson, 72, of West Burlington, passed away Monday, June 1, 2026, at his home after a courageous battle with thyroid cancer.

Born September 28, 1953, in Burlington, he was the son of Ralph Norman and Margaret Ann Schneider Nelson. On May 25, 1973, he married his high school sweetheart, Sue Bonar in Burlington. 

He was a graduate of Burlington High School. Steve started doing concrete work with his dad and brother, pouring basements with Ralph Nelson Construction at the age of 15. He and his brother had a special bond. He continued his career with Mike Nelson Concrete and Paving and retired after 55 years. After retiring, he worked with Bi-State Construction and Reid's Landscapes.

He attended Harmony Bible Church and was proud to be recently baptized. He loved to spend time with his grandkids, especially cheering them on at their sporting events. At an early age, he developed a love for hunting and fishing. He enjoyed annual trips to Canada for most of his life to partake in these activities. He was a very talented bowler. He bowled multiple 300 games and was a past winner of the state championship. 

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sue Nelson of West Burlington; one daughter, Julie (Tyler) Glasgow of Grimes; two grandchildren, Cole Glasgow and Landry Glasgow both of Grimes; sister-in-law, Pam Nelson of Burlington; three nieces, Heidi (Marc), Stacey (Jim), and Carly (Iggy); three nephews, Geoff (Lupita), Ruslan, and Scott Bonar; several great-nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Donna Bonar; brother-in-law, Russ Bonar; and special friends, Darren and Kim Grimshaw.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Mike Nelson.

Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2026 at Harmony Bible Church, 550 Division St., Burlington.

The memorial service for Mr. Nelson will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2026, at Harmony Bible Church, Burlington Campus.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at the church following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Community Foundation of Des Moines County.
