Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville’s girls soccer team took three times as many shots as Burlington High School did at Bracewell Stadium Tuesday night, but Grayhounds took the shot that counted.
Burlington’s Kevynn Siefken took a pass from Lily Newell and scored in overtime to give the Grayhounds a 1-0 victory. The Nikes took 31 shots to Burlington’s 10.
Siefken saw the game-winner coming. “It was a beautiful pass,” she said. Newell “sent it right through there and I beat the defenders.”
But a scoreless game for over 80 minutes can be “mind-boggling,” Siefken said. “We haven’t beaten them in three years, so coming out in overtime we knew we had a chance to win.”
Burlington improved to 12-4; the Nikes are 8-8.
Burlington goalkeeper Jenna Hentzel earned the shutout with 11 saves. The only other team to blank the Nikes this season was Dyersville Beckman, also a 1-0 score.
Yasmin Sorensen had four saves for ND-WB/D.
