Pat Laverne Shotwell, 80, of Middletown, died Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice in West Burlington.
Born July 27, 1945, in New Boston, Ill., he was the son of Norman "Pat" Berne and Edna Louise Burtalow Shotwell. In 1979, he married Judith Willoughby, and together they had their son. They later divorced.
He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran.
Pat began his career with Burlington Northern Railroad, where he worked for many years before joining the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAP). During his time at IAAP, he transitioned to the Department of the Army, where he remained until his retirement. In addition to his career, Pat dedicated countless hours to volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America. He served in quality control, helping certify scout camps and ensuring they met the highest standards.
Pat was actively involved in numerous organizations throughout his life. He was a proud member of the Freemasons, the Shriners, York Rite, where he held a state office, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #150 in Burlington. An avid outdoorsman, Pat found joy in fishing, proudly sharing stories of his prized 10-pound bass. He also enjoyed scuba diving, teaching both his son and others to dive, and had a lifelong passion for firearms and riding his motorcycle with friends.
Survivors include his son, Johnathon Shotwell of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters, Kathy (David) Downey of New Boston, Ill., Jeanette Chenault of Kentucky, and Nancy (Gary) Bjorne of Byron, Ill.; nine nieces and nephews; and 22 great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Willard Shotwell, and nephews.
Pat's celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 150, 2727 Mt. Pleasant Street, Burlington. Burial will be held in Keokuk National Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial has been established for the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 150 in Burlington.
