Denise J. Sweet, 70, of Burlington, died Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born August 19, 1954, in Peoria, Ill., she was the daughter of Charles and Doris Rowland. She married Dean Sweet on February 1, 1991.
Denise worked as a security officer for I.A.A.P. for 25 years and served as the family support liaison for the Southeast corner region for the Iowa National Guard and received the Army Commander’s Award for Public Service in 1996 and the Governor’s Volunteer Award, presented by Governor Terry Branstad in 1998.
She was a girl scout through the Cadet years, then became a leader. Her girl scout troop in Peoria made their own badges. She played on the I.A.A.P. softball team and was a member of the union until her retirement.
She enjoyed researching ancestry, reading, trying new recipes, watching Yellowstone and playing bingo at Mesquawki Casino.
She is survived by her husband Dean Sweet; two daughters Sabrina (Ty) Buras and Spring (Trisha) Buras; three granddaughters; two grandsons; two great grandsons; one great granddaughter; sister Elaine Sue Elliott (Lou Basso); very special brother-in-law Larry Johnson and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, brother, half brother and maternal and paternal grandparents.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 15th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.
The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 16th at Lunning Chapel. Pastor Paul Walker will officiate. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Casual attire (jeans/T-shirts) is requested.
A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
