Royce E. Schweizer, 73, died in Phoenix, Ariz. on December 4, 2022. A gathering of family and friends will celebrate Royce’s life on December 27, 2022, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hyperion Field Club, in Des Moines.
Royce was born in Burlington and was the eldest son of Donald and Mary Schweizer. Royce graduated from Burlington High School; attended the University of Iowa where he earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Royce began working for the State of Iowa as a Rehabilitation Counselor where he met Jean Barnard. They married soon afterward and enjoyed over 49 years of marriage. Royce later worked as a Disability Examiner and Administrative Law Judge for SSA. He retired from BTS as a disability consultant.
While they had no children of their own, Royce and Jean greatly enjoyed their nieces and nephews and their families.
Royce was a gentleman and a gentle man. He was known for his positive attitude and will be greatly missed by all his family and numerous friends. He was a longtime member of Hyperion Field Club and a lifelong golfer. Royce looked forward to helping family and friends, especially young homeowners, with their home projects.
Royce is survived by his wife Jean of Des Moines, and Surprise, Ariz. He is also survived by his brother John (Claudia) Schweizer; nephew Bryan (Morgan) and their daughter Addison Schweizer; and niece Sarah Schweizer (Pete Nash) and their son Anderson Schweizer Nash all of Ft. Collins, Colo.
Additional family includes Jean’s brother Dennis (Barb) Barnard of Urbandale; niece Alissa Barnard (Levi Hood) of Denver, Colo; and niece Megan Rasmussen (Mark) and their daughters Ellie and Lexi of Clive. Also surviving are niece Hillary Plazak and nephew Dexton Schweizer.
Royce was preceded in death by his parents and youngest brother Rob Schweizer.
Per Royce’s wishes, his body has been cremated and his ashes will be interred later. Memorials may be directed to your local chapter of the American Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, or First Tee.
